The Next Generation:

“College Counseling” is a common service for middle and high schools to provide. But what does that mean today? In this rapidly changing education landscape, the key criteria that college admission offices use to evaluate applications from prospective freshmen—grades, strength of curriculum, and admission test scores—have remained fairly consistent over the past two decades. Parent and student expectations are changing, however, prompting many schools to re-examine their programs to create competitive advantage by upgrading their college counseling services and tools.

Leadership Engagement

School leadership sets the tone when it comes to the quality of college counseling services provided, especially when it comes to high expectations and investing in the process.

Student Engagement

Counselors are getting creative in order to engage more students in the college planning process, prompting them to more actively participate in planning for the future.

Tools & Technology

College admissions offices are striving to make their websites more informative and mobile-friendly in order to appeal to changing engagement behaviors of this generation of students. The most effective enrollment programs have implemented a multi-media communication strategy (e.g., print, online, email, social media) that incrementally builds community and engagement.
