Strategic Planning Framework

Developing a strategic plan may be a requirement for accreditation or it could be a mandate from the board--whatever the motivation, it's a complex process that consumes a huge amount of precious time and resources. Will it be worth it?

The need for a plan seems obvious, but too many schools excessively invest to develop a formal strategic plan without realizing substantial benefit. Planning today is even more complex due to the rapid changes in educational technology, legislative requirements, donor expectations, instructional strategies, financial models, competitive pressures, and a tightening pool of talented administrative and faculty leaders.

Nevertheless, in order for the school to grow the school board and administration must set a clear direction moving forward that will inspire and engage teachers, parents, students, donors, and the community. The goal of strategic planning is to:

  1. Establish an accurate and shared understanding of the school past, present, and ideal future,
  2. Articulate a common set of values, rules, and goals, and
  3. Gain agreement on the best combination of people, processes, and outcomes to achieve that vision.

This provides the foundation upon which productive leadership decisions can be made throughout the year.
